BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO MOBILE PHONES

It might sound a trite question - but who wants a free phone?

If it is free there is ALWAYS a catch.

But what if you knew exactly what that catch was, and how you could make it work in your favour?

So why are mobile phones free?

Well, really they are not free. The mobile phone dealer has to buy in the phone at cost price. This can be from £30 to £500+. All the half-decent phones are £200 and more.

So why would the mobile phone dealer give the phone away? Are they making a loss?

Mobile phones are only free when they are connected on a 'pay-monthly' or'line rental' contract. This is the opposite of 'pre-pay' or 'pay as you go' phones (PAYG). With pay as you go phones you simply buy phone credit top up (eg £10, £20 credit) in a shop and add that to your phone. This means that you can only use the phone for as long as there is credit on the phone. No credit - no phone call.

With a pay-monthly (line rental) mobile phone you use the phone as much as you want, then simply pay for your calls by a monthly bill.

Think about this ... Which do you think the mobile phone networks prefer - a customer on pre-pay or a customer on pay-monthly contract?

The mobile phone networks prefer the contract customer, because the contract, which is usually 12 or 18 months long, signs the customer into that contract, and they are guaranteed to get 12/18 months worth of business from that customer, and maybe more afterwards if the customer continues with them (which most do). So the network is guaranteed 12+ months of line rental, plus the cost of any additional calls that the customer might make.

This is why the networks give a big commission to the dealer when they connect a customer on a pay-monthly contract. The amount of commissio the dealer gets is proportional to the monthly line rentla the customer agrees to pay each month under the contract. The more the line rental amount, the more the dealer's commission.

This is why dealers will often talk you into getting a higher price plan, with a higher line rental.

If you agree to a basic (cheaper) phone on a high price plan, then the dealer is laughing.

Now THIS is how the dealer is then able to give you that mobile phone for free.

Maybe the phone cost him £150, but if his network commission is £400, he can give you the mobile phone for free, and still make £250 profit.

If you visit a small independent retailer, and sometimes larger chain mobile phone retailers, you can usually negotiate and haggle to get a better deal. If you don't want a high-spec 'bells and whistles' phone, but you do talk a lot on the phone (hence need a high price plan with lots of incluclive call minutes), then you know that the dealer is going to get a big fat commission cheque.

With this in mind, you should be able to either get some money back, and/or get them to throw in lots of accessories or other free gifts to go with the phone.

This is how 'cashback offers' work. The cashback is paid out of the dealers commission, to make the offer more appealing to you.

Many website, although they 'wont haggle', do already have very competitive cashback offers, which means more money to you.

I have no idea how the combination of "pink" and "chocolate" works, but LG seem to think they have achieved it ...

And ironically enough, this one is on Orange network - Too many colours for me ... Orange, Pink Chocolate - I 'm starting to feel a bit off-colour ... (sorry - that was a terrible joke)

Anyway, it is a fun looking phone. Originally, it was 'chocolate' coloured, and the name seems to have stick. The model is actually the KG800.

Despite all the colour complexities, it is proving a very popular phone already, being sighted in a few celebrities pckets as well as selling like hot (chocolate) cakes.

The National Mobile Phone Crime Unit has joined forces with eBay to ban listings for blocked or barred mobile phones on the site in a bid to clamp down on the sale of stolen phones.The partnership follows a successful joint-operation to identify and arrest eBay users trying to sell blocked or barred phones.

This investigation led to 13 arrests with 45 stolen mobiles seized.Detective Chief Inspector Mick McNally, NMPCU, said:"Closing down this avenue for the sale of stolen mobile phones is a vital part of our campaign to halt handset theft - if thieves cannot sell the items, the drive to steal them will be significantly reduced."We want the public to register their mobile phones free of charge on www.Immobilise.com to give police the best chance of recovering stolen phones and arrest those who commit mobile phone crime.

How the Cellular System works:

Today's cellular system divides a city into small cells.
This enables extensive frequency reuse across a city, so
that millions of people can use cell phones simultaneously.
Each cell comprises of a base station with a tower and a
building to house the radio equipment. Each cell uses one-
seventh of the available channels so it has a unique set of
frequencies and there are no collisions.

A cell-phone carrier typically has 832 radio frequencies to
use in a city. Each cell phone uses two frequencies per
call -- a duplex channel -- so there are 395 voice channels
per carrier. (The other 42 frequencies are used for control
channels) Therefore, each cell has about 56 voice channels
available. Simply put, there are about 56 people talking
from their cell phones in a cell in an analog system. In a
digital system there are more number of channels. A digital
system can carry three times as many calls as an analog
system, so each cell has about 168 channels.

The cellular approach requires a large number of base
stations in a city of any size. A city can have hundreds of
towers. Each carrier in each city runs a central office
called the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO). The
office handles the phone connections to the normal land-
based phone system, and controls the entire base stations
in that region.

How Do Calls get transmitted:

When you switch on the phone, it listens for an SID (System
Identification Code - a unique 5-digit number that is
assigned to each carrier by the respective authority) on
the control channel. The control channel is a special
frequency where the phone and base station talk to one
another about the details of call set-up and channel
changing. If the phone fails to recognize a control
channel, it knows it is out of range and displays a "no
service" message.

When it receives the SID, the phone compares it with the
SID programmed in your phone. If the SIDs match, the phone
knows that the cell it is communicating is part of its home
system. Along with the SID, the phone transmits a
registration request, and the MTSO keeps track of your
phone's location in a database so that the MTSO knows which
cell you are in when it wants to ring your phone. The MTSO
gets the call, and it tries to find you. It looks in its
database to see which cell you are in. The MTSO picks a
frequency pair that your phone will use in that cell to
take the call. The MTSO communicates with your phone over
the control channel to tell it which frequencies to use,
and once your phone and the tower switch are on those
frequencies, the call is connected and Lo! You are talking
to your friend!

As you move away from your cell, your cell's base station
notes that the strength of your signal is diminishing.
Meanwhile, the base station you are moving toward (which is
listening and measuring signal strength on all frequencies,
not just its own one-seventh) detects the strength of your
phone signal increasing. The two base stations coordinate
with each other through the MTSO, and at some point, your
phone gets a signal on a control channel asking it to
change frequencies. Thus the signal is passed from cell to
cell as you travel.

Roaming

If the SID on the control channel does not match the SID
programmed into your phone, then the phone knows it is
roaming. The MTSO of the cell that you are roaming in
contacts the MTSO of your home system, which checks its
database, to confirm whether the SID of the phone you are
using is valid. Your home system verifies your phone to the
local MTSO, which tracks your phone as you move through its
cells.

In all these processes, your voice travels in the form of
radio waves and this fact has led to controversies in using
the cell phones. Well, Are they dangerous? Here are a few
assumptions that are believed to ensue from the use of cell
phones:

Radio waves emitted from mobiles heat-up body
tissue.

Magnetic fields created by mobile phones influence
the behavior of body cells.

Long mobile phone calls cause fatigue, headaches,
and loss of concentration.

Mobile phone users are susceptible to cancer in
areas of the brain adjacent to their ears.

Radio waves from mobile phones alter the gene expression.
All the above assumptions are baseless until proved. While
scientists are still slogging on this line of infinite
research, the never-ending craze for cell phones has
reached an insurmountable peak. Since these elegant cell
phones have amplified the expediency of today's
communication, the allegations on the health front are
overlooked.

The cell phone industry is the fastest growing in today's
world. And this handheld small gadget has not only
revolutionized the modern communication but the novelty of
this small wonder has also captivated the world with its
ever-fascinating charm.

The worrying problem is that some do not make it work, and have gone bust.
